Chinese Character and Furniture Design

In 2021, we proposed a design direction for word games aimed at incorporating the distinctive character creation logics of Chinese characters—pictographs, ideographs, compound ideographs, and phonetic loan characters—into furniture design.

 

Therefore, our deconstruction of the character "风" (fēng) is restrained, preserving the form of the character to the greatest extent possible. The backrest, armrest, and seat all reflect the stretch and elegance inherent in the semantics of the character "风" (wind). For our fabric-upholstered version of the "风 chair," we chose a highly aesthetic blue fabric, expressing the character's inherent character creation logic of "sea movement generates wind." Conversely, the version made of fiberglass is entirely coated with black lacquer, showcasing the unique sense of power and character inherent in Chinese characters. Within the smooth strokes and lines of the character "风" (wind), a space filled with a sense of security is created just right.
